Life is not a straight path. Trust me, life will never play exactly as you expect it to, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put in the effort toward the goals you want to reach and have a general sense of direction. As time goes on, you grow and evolve. So why should your plans be any different?
Mistakes are human, we all make them. It is important to remember this. Both in your personal and professional life, you will undoubtedly upset somebody or something. All humans are flawed to some degree. Accept this reality and stop trying to control it.
It will be difficult to pull yourself up after falling down and try again, but failure is inevitable. As someone once told me, it’s not how you drop the ball, it’s how you pick it up. If you make a mistake, take responsibility for it, do what you can to prevent others from making the same one, and go on with your life. Keep your head up and keep moving forward; you’ll be OK.
Don’t be too hard on yourself (or anyone else). Tense, serious people make tense, serious environments. Time is limited, and it should not be wasted being strained and agitated. Keep a light heart and a sense of humour. It will make the work environment much easier to be in.
Find balance. By this, I mean don’t work too hard but also don’t play too hard, eat well but don’t become obsessed with it, keep healthy but don’t preach your way of life to others. Find an outlet, like a sport or a hobby, where you can truly focus on the moment and forget about everything else.
It is fine to not have everything figured out. Seriously.
Despite appearances, no one really has their act together, and most people just do what they think others expect of them. You have to make errors, treat yourself well, and learn from them to discover your own, individual, wonderful voice. Try your best to not compare yourself to others, the path you take is entirely up to you.
TL;DR: Enjoy life, put money and time into yourself (your mental and physical health, your finances, your education), and make it interesting (whatever “interesting” means to you). Find balance, have faith in yourself, and learn from your mistakes.
If you’ve made it this far, I highly appreciate it. It means a lot to me, so thank you! What have you learnt these past 12 months? Whether you’re a fresh graduate or a more experienced professional, I’d love to learn more!
