How to make working from home ACTUALLY work

Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s buzzing in everyone’s ears – working from home. Gone are the days when working from the comfort of your home was just a fancy dream. Now, it’s as real as the hair on your head (sorry baldies) – but how do you make this dream a reality without turning into a hermit or losing your marbles? Let’s unravel this together, shall we?

  1. Setting up your workspace

First things first, you need a proper workspace. And no, we’re not talking about a makeshift desk in the corner of your living room where the cat keeps walking over your keyboard. Find a spot that’s comfortable, well-lit, and somewhat private. It might mean transforming a spare room into an office or getting creative with a nook in your flat. Remember, a good chair is your best mate here; your back will thank you! If you’re not wanting to work all week from home, consider hot desking. There are lots of wonderful places you can hire to work from as and when you please.

  1. Technology is (usually) your friend

Make sure you’ve got a reliable internet connection – nobody likes a frozen face during a Zoom call, right? Invest in some quality tech: a decent laptop, noise-cancelling headphones (these are mine – a lifesaver!), and maybe a second monitor if you’re feeling fancy. Oh, and don’t forget cybersecurity – keeping your work safe is not negotiable. I personally believe in contacting someone who knows what they’re doing, to really make sure you’re safe.

  1. Structure your day – Pyjamas till noon? Maybe not…

While working in your PJs sounds brilliant, it’s not always the productivity booster you’d think. Set a routine and stick to it. Wake up at a reasonable hour, get dressed -yes, real clothes- and plan your day. Remember to schedule breaks too. Yes, that means getting up from your desk and actually moving around. Your body and mind need it. I personally love to go on midday walks and typically fall into a local shop for a pastry or six.

  1. Communication is key

Keep in touch with your colleagues and clients. Regular check-ins, virtual meetings, and a bit of banter over messaging apps keep the team spirit alive. It’s important to feel connected, not just for work stuff but for the human interaction. We’re social creatures, even us introverts!

  1. Set boundaries – No, WFH does not equal available 24/7

This one’s crucial. When your home is your office, it’s easy to blur the lines between work time and personal time. Set boundaries. Decide on work hours and stick to them. When you’re done for the day, shut the door to your workspace, physically and mentally. Your downtime is sacred! If you’re lacking the space, make sure you put away all your work things (laptop, files, documents etc) so it doesn’t cloud your mind.

  1. Remember to socialise

Working from home doesn’t mean you have to be a recluse. Plan coffee dates, join local networking groups, or attend workshops. It’s about finding the right balance between solitary work time and social interaction. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

So, there you have it – your guide to making working from home a delightful reality. It’s about creating the right space, using technology wisely, structuring your day, communicating effectively, setting boundaries, and, importantly, not forgetting to have a life outside work.
